How To Get Involved - We Need Your Help!
CARRYING THE AA MESSAGE TO THE ALCOHOLIC
THAT LIVES IN A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY
There is a serious need for volunteers to do Twelve
Step work in the Correctional field. Here are some of the ways that your help is needed.
VOLUNTEER INSIDE THE
WALLS
(Guidelines)
Volunteering to attend meetings inside the walls
requires a commitment, along with a desire to give something back to AA. Each facility has
its own rules and regulations, which can cause frustration at times, but the rewards for
this kind of service are tremendous! You will be required to have a background check by
the Dept. of Corrections, and possibly to sit through a lengthy orientation, prior to
being allowed to go inside. Once cleared, you will have to function under the correctional
facilitys rules, and at some facilities subject yourself to a "pat-down"
search each time you enter the facility. The inmates that are attending meetings, or would
like to, desperately need this kind of volunteer! Many facilities wont allow the
inmates to hold a meeting without a volunteer present. Lets not forget the alcoholic
that is less fortunate than ourselves.
CORRESPOND WITH AN
INMATE
(Example Letter)
The General Service Office has in place a Correction
Program, by which an inmate who would like to write to a member of AA, will be put in
contact with a volunteer who has agreed to share their experience, strength, and hope by
letter. If you can write letters and would be willing to share with someone who
desperately needs "sober" contact, please help!
BE A
PRE-RELEASE CONTACT FOR AN INMATE
(Pre-Release Application)
Another way to help is to be a Pre-Release Contact
for an inmate that is going to be paroled to your community. When an inmate requests and
establishes contact with someone prior to their release, for the purpose of helping them
get to an AA meeting within the first 24 hours of their release, their chances of
continued sobriety increase dramatically! We can help these people accomplish this! This
is just good, old fashioned Twelve Step Work!
