Area 33 Special Needs Committee While there are no special A.A. members there are many members who have a special need. Please see below for the Special Need communities that the committee is currently attempting to reach: Deaf / Hard of Hearing Alcoholics The Special Needs Committee is actively collecting names of AA members that are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, members that can speak in sign language or members that are willing to take Deaf/Hard of Hearing alcoholics to meetings that serve Deaf/Hard of Hearing alcoholics. The Committee is also actively keeping track of meetings that serve alcoholics that are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. If you or someone you know is a homebound alcoholic and cannot afford AA literature, contact the Special Needs committee by email. AA Meeting Accessibility IssuesThere are many AA meetings that are accessible to people that depend on a wheelchair, motor scooter, crutches, etc. Most meetings with accessibility are listed on this website's meeting directory. Please click on the "Meetings" link at aa-semi.org. Veteran & AlcoholicThere are many sober AA members in Metro Detroit that are also Veterans of a Foreign War. If you are a Veteran and would like to talk to a sober Veteran, please email the Special Needs Committee. Additional Info for VeteransLanguage Barrier - Non-English Speaking Alcoholic If you know someone that does not speak English and is trying to get access to AA literature in their native language, please contact the Special Needs Committee. IlliteracyIf you know an alcoholic that is illiterate or that has trouble reading, there are options to receive the AA message in addition to AA meetings. The Special Needs Committee is currently collecting AA literature and meetings on cassette or compact disc. These will be available for those in need.
