2005 International Convention – “I Am Responsible” was the theme for the 2005 International Convention held in Toronto June 30^th through July 3^rd, 2005 to help celebrate the 70^th anniversary celebration of AA’s worldwide fellowship. Though still waiting on the final registration figures, just over 44,000 alcoholics, alanons, alateens and friends of AA enjoyed a fabulous weekend of laughter, beautiful weather, great panels, enthusiastic speakers, and a breath taking opening flag ceremony Friday night which including first time participation of AA members from the People’s Republic of China, Mongolia and Cuba.

The 25^th millionth copy of the Big Book was presented as a gift to Warden Jill Brown of San Quentin Prison in appreciation for the work past Warden Duffy did in promoting AA in the prison system.

The AAWS Board approved a post-Convention sales price of the Convention Souvenir Book/DVD at $10.00.

Public Information - As of June 1, two press releases have been prepared and circulated related to the 2005 International Convention - one about Leonard Blumenthal as the new Chair of the General Service Board, and one about our 70th Anniversary Celebration in Toronto. Both can be seen on G.S.O.'s A.A. Web site under "Media." As a result of these initial steps in getting the word out, several interviews have been arranged between radio and television stations in Canada and A.A. delegates or Class A trustees. Press releases and other related information has been shared with International G.S.O.s. In addition, 300 Media Kits-240 in English and 60 in French-have been assembled for distribution at media briefings in Toronto and to selected major media outlets in the U.S., as well as for the Press Room at the Convention in Toronto. Gayle, PI staff member, continues to emphasize the critical role that the media have played in saving countless lives over the past 70 years by their continued cooperation in protecting the anonymity of our members at the public level.

G.S.O. Staff Members- General Manager, Greg M., asked those present to reflect on our Staff member on Corrections, Mary Clare L.; and past Staff member, Lois F., who are facing health challenges with great spirit. Lois has been working part-time on special projects at G.S.O. and her example remains a beacon for current Staff. Please keep them in your prayers.

Finance- Contributions through April are approximately 4% above budget. The Contributions Department indicates that preliminary results for May suggest that contributions are on track - truly good news. Voluntary contributions from A.A. groups and members to the General Fund of the General Service Board are fundamental to G.S.O.'s services that support and guide A.A.'s purpose to help sick and suffering alcoholics achieve sobriety.

Cooperation With the Professional Community - There has been 54 exhibits scheduled so far this year at national conventions of professionals in the following fields: alcoholism/addiction, corrections, counseling, court/legal, education, geriatrics/gerontology, labor/workplace, medical, nursing, physical/occupational therapy, psychiatry/ psychology, public health, and social work. The hope is to add 6 more for a total of 60 by the end of the year.

Group Services - A communication was mailed to intergroups/central offices in the U.S. and Canada sharing some of the 55th General Service Conference Advisory Actions that may be of interest to these service centers.

International- Adrienne B. recently returned from Johannesburg, South Africa, where as an observer, she attended the 2"d Sub-Saharan Africa Service Meeting (SSASM), June 3-5. The meeting, hosted by the General Service Board of South Africa with support from the United Kingdom and U.S./Canada consisted of country reports, presentations and workshops on the anonymity, self-support, literature translations and carrying the A.A. message to alcoholics and non-alcoholics. Delegates present represented ten Sub-Saharan Africa countries: Uganda, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Kenya, Namibia, Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa. On May 26 the members of Alcoholics Anonymous in Trinidad and Tobago celebrated their 49th anniversary with a National Convention. The theme was "Gratitude in Action."

Publications- During the first five months of 2005, G.S.O. distributed a total of 878,039 book units, down 10% from the same period in 2004 when 971,103 units were distributed. Big Book sales for the five-month period totaled 401,074 units, compared to 504,572 distributed during the same period last year. Gross Sales for April and May 2005 were budgeted at $1,941,420. Actual sales, unaudited, were $2,041,037, up $99,617 or 5% over budget. April and May 2004 gross sales amounted to $1,979,107. Licenses were approved for the Japanese Dr. Bob and the Good Old-Timers and the Swedish Dr. Bob and the Good Old-Timers and Pass It On.

Service Fair- In place of our normally scheduled Area 33 assembly, September 18^th, 2005, Area 33 will be hosting a service fair. The service fair is a great way to enlighten members of area 33 of the third legacy work and that service certainly is the secret. Bob C. is putting together a very nice program and Bob M., out newly appointed trustee, has agreed to be a participant. Flyers will be available at the next area meeting but please start passing the word. Oh, I almost forgot, free food.

Area Office-Just a brief update on the status of the area office and the new lease. First off, thank you Dan S. for bringing us this far toward our new lease. We spoke with the landlord and are waiting on a quote for moving the existing wall back 18” to increase the seating space. He also mentioned another space that would be similar in money but might accommodate our needs better. Once we have updated information, well more will be revealed.

Area Minutes- The task of combining the mailing list from G.S.O. with that of area 33 has been completed. Combining the two databases enabled us to remove over 225 duplicated names and also gives us a fresh mailing list to begin the implementation of emailable minutes. Whereas we want everyone who desires the minutes to receive them, it would help the area financially if you can take the minutes electronically. Please see Kristin or Hugh for more information.

Los Minutos del área- La tarea de combinar la lista de envío de G. S. O. con que de área 33 han sido completados. Combinar las dos bases de datos nos permitieron a quitar sobre 225 nombres duplicados y también nos damos una lista de envío fresca empezar la implementación de minutos de emailable. Mientras que queremos que todos que desee los minutos recibanlos, ayudarían el área financieramente si usted puede tomar los minutos electrónicamente.
